5* Debut at Pau
As our 2024 season comes to a close, we ended on a high with a trip to the south of France for our final event—Alex’s and Cool Jack’s debut at the CCI5* in Pau. Following an excellent run at Blenheim Palace and a smooth lead-up, anticipation was high as we headed into this exciting milestone.
After a long journey through France and settling into the showgrounds, the competition began with dressage on Friday. Despite relentless rain, the French crowd packed the stands, creating an electric atmosphere. Cool Jack started off with some of his best work to date, trending in the low 20s. Unfortunately, a bit of tension crept in, leading to a few small mistakes that cost them some marks. Even so, we were proud of much of the work they produced and quickly shifted our focus to cross-country day.
Overnight, Pau was hit by historic levels of rainfall, and by Saturday morning, it was clear the weather would be just as much a test as the course itself. The deluge continued throughout the day, and with Alex and Cool Jack running later in the order, conditions were about as tough as they come.
But they were more than ready. Cool Jack attacked the course with heart and confidence, tackling every question with ease and making it look well within his scope. Despite the holding ground, they delivered a steady, composed round—ears pricked and full of running to the end.
After passing Sunday’s final trot-up, it was on to show jumping. The course was technical and up to height, and the atmosphere was electric once again. Cool Jack gave it his all, just catching two late poles—but finished the weekend looking and feeling every bit the 5* horse.
